Format your calculator to four decimal places

It is a good idea to format your calculator to four decimal places. There are a number of reasons for this:

1. The CFA® institute rarely gives answers that use more than four decimal places. Answers are usually up to two decimal places.

2. When seeing four decimal places it is easy to calculate a percentage to 2 decimal places in your head, without having to manually multiply by 100 on your calculator.

A breakdown of the process

To format your calculator to four decimal places:

1. Press 2nd function and then FORMAT ( . ).

DEC= will appear on the left hand side of your screen.

2. Enter 4 and lock it in with the ENTER key.

3. Press CE/C to exit out.

Your calculator should now show four decimal places.
